Tom Hindes spends little time introducing whittling (aside from a guide to choosing a knife), before describing his four kinds of projects - Basic, People, Animals and Baby Animals.
He does, however, provide a 'sampler' - a practice piece that allows the beginner to practice the basic cuts used in whittling: the stop cut, the push cut and the parting cut.
The first project is a Gee Haw Whimmy Diddle (similar to the one in Classic Whittling). The second is a small Pumpkin Pin which the author whittles with Jack-o-Lantern face. This completes the Basic section.
The People section describes the whittling of a 5-Minute Wizard, a 5-Minute Santa, a Farmer and a Gnome. The large Animals are a Dog, Bear, Gargoyle, Horse and Fox, while the Baby Animals are a Fawn, Piglet, Baby Fox, Bear Cub and Baby Elephant.
Each of the step-by-step instructions is accompanied by a photo of the finished item, a sequence of photos, an outline diagram, a list of tools and materials and a note on finishing.
Overall, the projects are interesting and attractive and should provide plenty of exercise for the reader's whittling skills.
